《巨人的陨落》第四章
矿上的管理者驱逐寡妇,这些寡妇的丈夫都死于之前的一场矿难,这在年年有的比利心中显然是不可饶恕且因该得到大声斥责的行为,但是他父亲对此的理智处理对比利产生了一些影响。罢工是又一波工人阶级的反抗,但是在本章结束却以大部分人被驱逐和外界的不理解暂时为结局。人去厂空,只剩下冰冷的机器。艾瑟尔与菲茨的地下恋情在这场斗争的背景下进展着,就像在阴天飞翔的白鸽。希望渺茫,可它依旧在那里。

这是极其压抑的一章,整本书的感情基调再次下跌。格雷戈里的见义勇为导致他邂逅了美丽的卡捷琳娜,关于悲惨童年的回忆使人心痛。同时也深刻揭示阶级之间的压迫和斗争往往都是以人民的鲜血作为代价的。惨痛的同年却不只是他一人拥有,卡捷琳娜完全不意外的语调同样含着深刻意义。这是一读起来有些喘不上气的文字。
